Gilbert de Lannoy
Description
Guillebert (Gilbert) de Lannoy (1386–1462) was a Flemish knight in Burgundian service, traveller and diplomat, and a founding member of the Order of the Golden Fleece. His travel accounts include journeys through Lithuania, Novgorod and Pskov in 1413–1414, making him one of the early Western European observers of Russia. The source credits him with the first recorded mention of the word “greçka” and a note about a fight over buckwheat at the Pskov market; this specific claim could not be verified and is kept as the source states it.
